Connor Koichi Wong is Here!

Last night I was awoken at 10 to 1 thinking that I was thoroughly late for work. It was Lorna telling me that she was in labor and was having contractions every 5 minutes since 11:00 which was shortly after we had gone to bed. So it was off to the hospital with a short stop at the Jack in the Box drive thru. It would be Lorna's last bite to eat for a while since you can't eat any solids during labor.

At the Hospital we checked in at 2:00 and Lorna was just 3cm dilated. She went thru 3 additional hours of labor before getting her first dose of the pain killer Fentanyl at around 5am. That worked for 40 minutes but then wore off. The doses could only be administered once every hour, so Lorna took another dose at 6 and consulted with the nurse on duty. She checked her again and told us that Lorna was barely 4cm if even that. We decided that it was time for the Epidural. From that time Lorna wasn't feeling much of anything but some pressure and she could self regulate the portions of the medication if she wasn't comfortable. We did that until about 8 when they checked Lorna again and decided to put her on Potussin to induce her a bit since she was still only 4cm dilated. The Potussin only got Lorna to 7cm by 3:00 which wasn't the greatest. The problem was that we couldn't figure out how long ago Lorna's water had broken, and that a possible infection was causing Lorna to run a fever and resulting in the baby's heart rate to rise. Our doctor immediately ordered a C- Section since the baby's head was moulding even though Lorna was still 3cm away from being fully dilated.

The transition from our waiting game to surgery was rapid. Luckily, just as we started getting ready for the procedure, in the door walked our good friend Yumi, who I had been keeping up to date all day by texting. She wanted to help us out by video taping the vaginal delivery which I had expected to be later that afternoon. I'm sure we surprised her when we gowned her up to go with us into surgery. Her timing couldn't have been more perfect as she gave me the opportunity to experience more of the birth without having to worry about the video.

The C-section went off without a hitch with Mother and Son doing well. The end product of all of this? Connor Koichi Wong weighing in at 7lbs 6oz and 20.5" in length born at 3:31PM on 11/28/07.
